On 8 March 2024, International Women's Day, María Dolores Gómez Molleda, rector of the University of Salamanca between March 1979 and 1980, became the first woman to have her portrait installed in the Portrait Room of the Rectorate Building. It was the only portrait missing from the gallery in which the pictures of past rectors are displayed.
In a simple ceremony attended by several members of the TA, the painting by Professor José María Larrondo was unveiled. The rector, Ricardo Rivero, (who moments later resigned from his post) and the director of Equality at the University, Inmaculada Sánchez Barrios, led the ceremony.
“It is important to remember and honour those who preceded us, and Rector Gómez Molleda played an important role that we are now acknowledging with this portrait”, said the rector in his speech.
Inmaculada Sánchez Barrios spoke highly of “the role that Professor Gómez Molleda fulfilled not only in the year in which she was serving as rector, but also during the previous five years as vice-rector and the ten years she was in charge of the Casa Museo Unamuno.” She thanked “two people very close to the honoree who opened the doors of their home to me: Carmen Cembranos and Carmen Rita García.”
