On 3 September at the Teresian School in Rio de Janeiro, the TA in Brazil celebrated the “golden jubilee” of the bilingual magazine Nuevamerica/Novamerica. Its editorial board were having a special meeting from September 3 to 5 and they presented various commemorative materials.
Susana Sacavino, editor-in-chief of the magazine Nuevamerica/Novamerica, together with the editorial board—composed of members from different countries—met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 3 to 5 September 2026, to evaluate the work carried out this year and to plan the four issues scheduled for 2027.

Those three days of meetings allowed us time to study the present world situation and to exchange ideas, to agree and disagree and then come to a final agreement.
The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of the magazine Nuevamerica/Novamerica. For this reason, throughout the discussions and proceedings, there was a palpable sense of satisfaction at a job well done, joy and gratitude for the magazine’s long history and hope for an equally long future.
Celebration
On September 3, after the last meeting that day at the Teresian School, the team attended the presentation led by Susana Sacavino and Adélia Koff of the materials that were produced to commemorate this anniversary:
- an e-book featuring selected articles from the magazine covering the period from 2022 to 2026;
- an e-book with links to virtual panel discussions and podcasts produced between 2020 and 2026 (both e-books intended for the continuing education of educators);
- a video illustrating and showcasing the magazine’s history over the past 50 years;
- the magazine’s 50th-anniversary logo and its use not only in the e-books but also in the magazine “Nuevamerica/Novamerica” No. 191 (commemorative edition) launched for the occasion.
After the presentation of these materials, Mass was celebrated in the school chapel to give thanks for God’s constant presence over these five decades and for the many blessings received.
At the end of the celebration, everyone present went to a classroom in the school to celebrate the anniversary, complete with a cake, to sing “Happy Birthday” and rejoice in the magazine’s journey.

The joyful atmosphere was heightened by the presence of members of the Teresian Association and friends and collaborators of Novamerica and the Teresian School.
Among us there were two prominent figures who are part of the history of our publication: Vera Maria Candau, the magazine’s representative in Brazil, and Mary Larrosa, the magazine’s representative in Uruguay. Both are a living memory of the magazine’s beginnings in Argentina in 1976 and of the journey undertaken in the years that followed. Both of them continue with determination to contribute to the publication into the future.

With all our hearts
The Editorial Board then continued its meeting. During the morning prayer on the 4th, gratitude was expressed for the work done to organize the gathering, to produce all the materials presented, and to put together the magazine’s anniversary celebration. We also remembered with gratitude all of the contributors to the magazine who have already left us and whose memory remains in our hearts along with many others.
St Pedro Poveda said that “our guiding principle is to do everything from the heart.” The magazine has been built up from the very depths of our hearts since 1976, and its heart still has life for another 50 years.
